This week we look at a topic many have heard about but aren’t familiar with the details. We look at the early origins of the Jewish people in China and the time of the settlement in Kaifeng, Henan. Although you’d be hard pressed to find a minyan amongst the native Jews in Kaifeng today, there are efforts being made to revive Judaism in that ancient city. It’s an interesting story that spans a millenium and offers a look at Chinese history from another angle.

Although I love your modern explorations of modern Chinese history, the main reason why I have been such an avid listener and fan is because of shows like these. The Keifeng Jews are a revelation to me. I’m wasting an entire Saturday morning looking things up on-line. History that I had no knowledge of are revealed with every podcast.
You do the Lords work Laszlo. Never stop!
Thanks so much for this, Mr. Montgomery. It’s a fascinating and little-known fact that Jewish communities once thrived in China and I’m so glad you’re covering it.
Thanks for this great episode. I wrote about it on the blog: http://anneisaman.blogspot.com/2013/03/along-ancient-road-to-kaifeng-chp.html
Dank je wel Anne. Ik ben altijd dankbaar voor uw vriendelijke reacties! I hope you’re well. Thanks for the kind comments.
So grateful for this podcast. I kept telling friends that there were Jews in China, but no one believed me. Now I can send them here.
You have all the proof you need now!
Great podcast once again. I’ve turned to be a fan of your podcast and I can’t wait to listen to your Tibet chapter ( oh boy that will be a wonderful challenge!) Greetings and warm regards from Brazil!
Actually Tibet has been on the list from day one. There’s more to that area than the struggle being waged since 1959. My personal interests are more in the northwest of China than in Tibet so I will probably cover Xinjiang first. Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang….I’ll get to them all sooner or later.
Wow. As a long time listener, this was one of my favorites!
I usually listen to CHP at the gym. Nothing gets you pumped up like the coming together of two ancient, storied, and accomplished peoples along history’s greatest trade route.
Keep it up Laszlo!
You have done an outstanding job of presenting the history of the Kaifeng Jewish community. Your listeners who might want more detailed information and/or something to read, should check out the website of Sino-Judaic Institute. The website has a long history of Kaifeng as well as later, Western, Jewish life in China.
I am very glad that I have found the China History Podcast. Thank you very much!
Fascinating podcast! I’m doing a report on the Kaifeng Jews and wondering what were some of the sources you turned to for research?
I mainly used:
“Legends of the Chinese Jews of Kaifeng” By Xin Xu. Also by the same author there is “The Jews of Kaifeng, China: history, culture, and religion”. There’s also: “The Survival of the Chinese Jews: The Jewish Community of Kaifeng”, by Donald Leslie. Sorry for the delay…..Good luck.
